2.0 Rationale of the Programme
2.1 Needs Assessment
Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, being a technological institution has identified the critical role that technology plays in our nation’s development in line with Vision 2030 and beyond. The field of statistics is constantly being challenged by the problems that science and industry brings to its door. In the early days, these problems often came from agricultural and industrial experiments and were relatively small in scope. With the advent of computers and the information age, statistical problems have exploded both in size and complexity. The explosion of data being recorded from different sources such as the internet, business processes, surveys and social media has created an ever increasing demand for specialists who can use analytical tools and techniques to uncover information including the hidden pat- terns, trends, preferences and unknown correlations to help in providing information to the government and other organizations to make informed decisions. The statistician’s job is to extract important pat- terns and trends, and understand “what the data says.” This challenge of learning from data have led to a revolution in the statistical sciences as computation plays such a key role. It is therefore not surprising that much of this new development has been done by statisticians in collaboration with other researchers in fields such as computer science and engineering.
Thus in order to attain vision 2030 and “big 4 agenda” the government needs to use this available data or collect new sets of data so as to make sound projections and decisions that are based on the needs of its citizens. Other governmental and non-governmental organizations need also to embrace this form of decision making so as to spur growth in the country. The link between knowledge and practical skills is essential in both social and scientific fields and require a thorough and broad training in the method- ology of statistical theory, modelling and data analysis laying emphasis on applications to real-world problems. This is a practical-orientated programme that gives the learners advanced knowledge in sta- tistical methods with a strong emphasis on relating theory to practice and thus learners will develop analytical, logical, numerical and problem-solving skills that will enable them be job creators rather than job seekers. This programme will promote an inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all (Sustainable Development Goal 8) by leveraging on the use of available data to make informed decisions and formulate sound policies.
2.2 Stakeholder Involvement
The stakeholders of this course were drawn from the government, academia and business organisation. There was a stakeholders forum on 15th September 2017. Their views and recommendations were incorporated in the development of the curriculum as much as possible.
2.3 Justification of the need for the Programme
Statistics is concerned with decision-making in the face of uncertainty, and lies at the heart of the type of quantitative reasoning necessary for making important advances in the sciences, such as medicine and genetics, and for making important decisions in business and public policy. Over the recent past some policies and decision made by the government have not been based on scientific research. This leads to loss of revenue and time when such decisions are abandoned midway. This could be avoided if information based policies and decisions were made. Our graduates will fill this gap by providing the technical advise through the use of the available information. This programme offers a balance between statistical theory and its applications as it covers the statistical theory and computing. The graduates will acquire the scientific skills of data collection, analyzing, interpreting and communicating it to provide the necessary solutions to real-life problems. The broad base training in the areas of statistical theory and computing will allow the graduates to be appreciate the general principles of statistical inference and computing techniques in data analysis. They will also use the acquired knowledge and skills in developing new models and adopt statistical methodology and modelling techniques to make informed decisions to real-life problems. Graduates will thus qualify for jobs in a wide range of areas including but not limited to academic institutions, research institutions, financial and Investment institutions, gov- ernment and non governmental institutions. The programme will also equip and prepare graduates for further studies.
2.4 Goal of the Programme
The goal of the program is to equip the graduates with the theory and methodology required for the design of experiments, collection and subsequent analysis of data and use it for decision making.
2.5 ProgrammeExpected Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate a mastery of theoretical statistical knowledge.
- Interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and make professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Apply statistical knowledge and skills, with creativity and initiative to new situations in professional practice and/or for further learning.
- Conduct an independent scientific research ethically.
